How it all started:
ARTichokes was founded in 2007 bringing a new concept to the Kansas City Art scene. The concept combined a Fine Art Gallery with an active studio space where people of all ages could learn and participate in the artistic process. Rebecca Pashia had dreamed of the business for years and the pieces finally came together where she and her sister, Laurie Barling, and friends, Megan Sutherland & Jackie Warren, could bring the idea to life in Leawood, Kansas.
Why the name ARTichokes?
Rebecca (Becky) painted for the first time in Eleventh grade. She had recently moved to Kansas City and her high school accidentally put Art 101 on her schedule – although she had not signed up for it. She went to class on the first day and was intrigued when the teacher asked the students to bring their favorite food to class the next day. Photograph and paint her favorite food? Becky brought an artichoke and gave it a try. Her painting, Artichoke and Lemons, won multiple district awards and the Purchase Award, which meant her high school bought the piece for $150. She has been painting ever since.
The ARTichokes concept is about trying something “outside the box”. What if you are really good at something that you’ve never even tried? Becky believes that every person has an inner artist begging to show him or herself. This company provides a positive platform where it is fun to experiment with color and explore creativity.
A change in ownership:
In January 2011, Becky and Laurie started a new company, Wet Canvas LLC, and continued the ARTichokes business under that name. Wet Canvas is the umbrella company for many creative projects for people of all ages. It is the distributor for the Scribble Shop series & the Paint with Pashia series, with many more projects to come.
A mobile concept:
In January 2013, ARTichokes became a mobile company, bringing creative activities and Fine Art into the local community and beyond. Corporate Team Building, Private Painting Classes, Group Paintings in restaurants and country clubs, Creative Weekend Workshops, Art Consultations and Pop-Up Gallery shows ~ there is no limit to what this company can do!
